On Saturday, November 29, a conference was held with the local community in the council chamber of the Municipality of Orgosolo. The conference was titled “LIFE Streams and the project for the protection and management of genetic refuges for Mediterranean trout in Sardinia: management perspectives for the Rio Flumineddu sub-basin.”
Several key points were addressed and discussed during the conference, including:
▪ Maintaining native source populations undisturbed (through a fishing ban) so they can serve as genetic refuges and ensure the conservation of native trout biodiversity.
▪ Creating new native trout populations by eradicating non-native populations and translocating individuals from the source population, such as that of the Rio Flumineddu.
▪ Zoning fishing activity by designating areas designated as genetic refuges, catch-and-release stretches, and stretches with sustainable harvest, with quotas established based on population monitoring.
▪ Conduct continuous monitoring and define management methods by actively involving stakeholders, such as recreational fishermen.
A heartfelt thank you to all the speakers and the numerous participants!
