STREAMS sampling of Mediterranean trout populations has recently concluded in Maiella National Park.
Since 2019, the activities have aimed to improve the river habitat and strengthen Mediterranean trout populations through selective fishing, targeted planting, and removal of non-native species.
Although it is perhaps still too early to draw definitive conclusions (we are awaiting the results of genetic analyses on the collected samples), in stretches where once exclusively Atlantic brown trout populations were present, individuals of different ages with color patterns attributable to the Mediterranean lineage are now observed.
