The International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN) today presented an update to the Red List at COP28 in Dubai, highlighting a growing climate impact on species, with a particular focus on freshwater fish.
The IUCN update contains the first comprehensive assessment of the world’s freshwater fish species: 25% are currently at risk of extinction. At least 17% of threatened freshwater fish species are affected by the effects of climate change, including falling water levels, rising sea levels causing salt water to rise up rivers and change of seasons. Added to this are the threats deriving from pollution, which affect 57% of freshwater fish species at risk of extinction, from dams and water capture, which affect 45%, from excessive fishing, which threatens the 25%, and from invasive species and diseases, which damage 33%.
