As part of the project for the protection and management of genetic refuges of Mediterranean trout in Sardinia, a very interesting paper has just been published on MDPI – Diversity that our partner Agenzia Forestas conducted in collaboration with UNICA, in which 4 monitoring methods were compared: electrofishing, underwater camera, observation from the shore and line fishing.
The study verified how all four methods give a coherent indication of the relative abundance of trout in three different populations and at the same time how each method is differently influenced by environmental variables – water depth, pool area, shade and water turbidity – and by the age of the trout.
None of the 4 methods investigated is infallible, therefore the selection should be based on practical, economic, social and ethical considerations, as well as on the objectives of the monitoring.
