On 25 January, the activities for the first reproduction of Mediterranean trout of the LIFE Streams project also began in the National Park of the Casentinesi Forests, Monte Falterona and Campigna. The technicians of the Park and of the project, together with the volunteers of the fishing associations, started the first juices at the Premilcuore hatchery.
Thanks to the precious genetic data collected by the project and to the analyzes carried out by the Higher Institute for Environmental Protection and Research (ISPRA), the first breeders have been selected that will give life to a new progeny of Mediterranean trout that will fill the streams of the area. protected starting next summer. During the first day, the first 2,000 eggs were “produced” which, after 40 days of careful care, will hatch. From there, it will take 30 days for the yolk sac to be reabsorbed and, after 2 months of feeding and growth, the trout will be released into nature in the first days of June in stretches of stream suitable for hosting the Mediterranean trout, a species that unfortunately is disappearing. from the waters of our peninsula, supplanted by the Atlantic “cousin”.
