Friday 30 June next, Forestas organizes a day of catch and release and selective fishing in the suggestive Rio Fundu di Monti, Tempio Pausania. The appointment is set for 18:00 in front of the Fundu di Monti forest nursery, where the participants will have the opportunity to participate in fishing trials until 21:00. It is necessary to book in advance to participate.
Like the previous experiences, it is a field training meeting organized as part of our LIFE Streams and aims to bring together technicians and sport fishermen to promote “catch and release” fishing for native trout. Furthermore, we intend to explore the possibilities of practicing selective fishing and carrying out genetic monitoring on a hybrid population, such as the one present in Rio Fundu di Monti.
During the day, the participants will be accompanied by the technical-scientific staff involved in the project who will guide them in selective fishing trials directly in the Rio. Important teachings will be provided on how to morphologically distinguish native trout from allochthonous (brown trout) and hybrid ones.
To minimize the environmental impact, “catch and release” fishing techniques will be used which involve the use of barbless hooks, artificial baits and rubber landing nets. The captured trout will be marked with elastomers and photographed. Furthermore, before being released, the method for taking a sample of the fin necessary for subsequent genetic analyzes will be illustrated. These data will be fundamental for the genetic characterization of the fish population.
Trout identified as definitely non-native will be removed, while native or non-distinguishable trout will be released in the same spot where they were caught. Only through genetic analyses, in fact, will it be possible to determine with certainty whether native, hybrid or fario. These results will contribute to the understanding of how landform-based identification can be useful in distinguishing hybrid wild trout in local populations.
To participate in the initiative, it is necessary to contact Forestas in advance by sending an e-mail to pcasula@forestas.it. Up to a maximum of 10 entries will be accepted.
We are waiting for you!
